Eavesdropping doesn't pay

Jared and I have been discussing, sometimes passionately, how best to budget for and pay off our recently acquired medical debt. Let's just say we could have bought Eric a car instead of fixing his arm. I'll remind him of that when he is 16.

It is easy to forget about all the little ears running around this place. Last night I was reminded that there was an audience for our budget discussions.

Me: Tara, why haven't you made a Christmas list?
Tara: I don't want to. Besides, we aren't getting anything this year.
Me: Why not!?!
Tara: Because, we spent all of our money fixing Eric's arm.

It's so sad when children take upon themselves the worries of their parents. Part of me was crushed and part of me is super excited for her to realize that Christmas comes despite medical bills. Plus, Tara shouldn't be eavesdropping anyway.

A car for how much you paid to fix his arms? WOW. I um... can't wait to have children?

Ouch on the medical debt! It is killer!

I have a little 8 yr old eavesdropper too. She wants to know every little bit of information she can get.

I'm planning on taking it easy this Christmas despite the financial woes...I just don't want a lot more crap in my house that I have to clean up!

I love it. Tara is so cute.

(I was/am an eavesdropper too.)

What a perceptive child. Wow, I can't believe his surgery cost so much! Yikes! Sorry.

I think that kids are so aware and want to be helpful. Our kids all asked for very little from us because they don't want us to spend a lot of money. Emma asked me how much two of the gifts she wants are. I told her. She then came to me a little later with her letter to Santa. She put the more expensive thing on her list for Santa to get it for her. I asked her about it and she said she knows it is hard to make money so she thought Santa could make her the more expensive gift and help us out this year. Kids are so cute sometimes.
